Cantaloupe in Stockport to Close, New Concept Bar Caput Announced

Cantaloupe, a Michelin-praised wine bar and restaurant located in Stockport's Underbanks, has announced it will close this summer after just 18 months of operation. The owners, chefs Joshua Reed-Cooper and Mike Thomas, who previously worked at Where The Light Gets In, plan to replace it with a new concept called Bar Caput, set to open on August 26, 2025.

Rise to Fame

Opened in November 2024, Cantaloupe quickly gained popularity for its 'no-thrills bistro' approach. In August 2025, it was named one of three Greater Manchester spots as Michelin Inspectors' Favourite New Restaurants. In February 2026, it received a Bib Gourmand, an honour recognising great value for money. The Michelin Guide praised its 'bright Mediterranean flavours and a welcome simplicity,' with dishes like fennel sausage ragu rigatoni, duck breast with mint and fig, and a 'punchy and flavoursome' onion tart.

Closure Announcement

Just four months after its latest accolade, the team announced on social media that Cantaloupe will close after its last service on Saturday, August 8, 2025. The owners expressed gratitude: 'Over the past 18 months we’ve sated hunger with countless different dishes, utilising all manner of fish, fowl, beast or vegetable; we’ve quenched thirsts with one of the most interesting wine lists in the region and many many cocktails.' They highlighted proud moments including the off-site piri piri chicken night 'Frango Fandango' and the on-site 'Le Midi', as well as the Good Food Guide Top 100 listing and the Michelin Bib Gourmand achieved from a 'kitchen 75cm by 3 metres 15, with subpar equipment.'

Local businesses and regulars have expressed support. Runaway Brewery said: 'Loved having Cantaloupe part of our community - can't wait to see what Caput brings.' Stockport Provisions commented: 'Can’t wait to see the next chapter! It’s been a great ride so far and I’m sure that what’s to come will be just as exciting.' Where The Light Gets In responded: 'Looking forward to more good times and walking out that door feeling glad all over.' Yellowhammer added: 'Cantaloupe is the best! But looking forward to seeing what comes next.' One regular customer noted: 'Sad to be losing Cantaloupe - we've loved every dinner.' Another said: 'End of an incredible Cantaloupe era but can’t wait for the next iteration.'
