Brighton have completed the signing of Croatia defender Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham for a club-record fee of £46 million. The 19-year-old has signed a five-year contract with the Seagulls, effectively replacing Jan Paul van Hecke, who moved to Spurs for £52 million last month.
Impressive Loan Spell at Hamburg
Vuskovic made 30 appearances for Hamburg during his loan spell last season, scoring six goals in the Bundesliga. His performances caught the attention of Brighton, who moved quickly to secure his signature.
“Last season he demonstrated he can play at a very high level and we want to help him build on that within our environment,” said Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler. “There’s been a lot of external noise about Luka joining us, but he is still a young guy who will need time to adjust to the demands of playing for Brighton and the Premier League. We are confident that he will take this in his stride though.”
Limited Opportunities at Tottenham
Vuskovic's path to first-team football at Tottenham was blocked by the arrivals of Van Hecke and Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth. He joined Tottenham from Hajduk Split last year but made only one senior appearance, starting in a 4-2 loss to England at the World Cup.
Brighton’s Investment in Young Talent
The £46 million fee is a club record for Brighton, surpassing the previous record set by the signing of Enock Mwepu. The deal underscores Brighton's strategy of investing in young, promising talent with high resale value.
