Benidorm is renowned for its glorious sunshine, pristine beaches and affordable prices - but one travel expert maintains a significant transformation is underway in the beloved Spanish resort destination, and scarcely anyone is discussing it.
Frank the Stag Man's Theory
Frank the Stag Man has turned to social media to present his perspective on why so many sun loungers throughout the resort sit unoccupied, even during the height of the summer season. Speaking on TikTok, he explained: "The video I put up not long ago about why there are so many deck chairs without people in them and what's happened to the people, why does the beach seem quieter than usual for this time of year?"
"A lot of other TikTok creators and content creators have been putting up videos and doing, you know, posts on Facebook and all that about the same topic. Well, do you know what occurred to me? It actually occurred to me yesterday in such a major way. We were driving down the strip in Benidorm, and it's packed. It's absolutely packed. Miller's Beach Bar, Miller's Bar, Stagman Sports Bar and Grill, Stagman Steakhouse, all packed."
Changing Clientele
He continued to outline what he reckons has shifted - suggesting it's the category of tourist making their way to Benidorm. He stated: "The type of clientele in Benidorm is changing. Doesn't mean it's getting younger, but that's kind of what you think. The type of clientele that would be dying to get onto the beach every day and take a sunbed and chill out and just sun themselves. It's changing into more. The party animal. It's changing more and more... Tribute bars and live shows are turning into disco bars, they're turning into clubs, they're turning into open terraces. Like Zodiac and that used to be a big cabaret bar. It's very successful. So the people who come here are changing. They're becoming more clubby."
Frank believes holidaymakers who might previously have opted for destinations like Ibiza or Magaluf are now increasingly choosing Benidorm as their preferred location. That said, he doesn't think the transformation is purely about age, but more about an evolution in the kind of break people are seeking.
Public Reactions
Offering their perspectives, one user remarked: "We are older ladies, and we come here twice a year, and we have noticed it's all for young ones, so we are looking for somewhere different now." Another user contributed: "People are either by the pool at the hotel or in the bars, it costs too much to sit on the beach these days." A third user stated: "Prefer to get our money's worth so dancing and drinking as opposed to sunning."
