Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the owners of Liverpool FC, are in discussions with a consortium led by Amit Bhatia regarding a minority investment in the club, according to reports.
Bloomberg reports that Bhatia, the son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, is aiming to acquire a stake of up to 30 per cent. FSG confirmed last week that the British-Indian entrepreneur had approached them as part of a consortium seeking a minority investment.
Notable figures approached
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin are reportedly among those who have been approached to join the investment group. Sky News revealed this week that Saverin has been sounded out to participate.
The discussions continue as part of Liverpool's search for additional investment, following a previous arrangement with Dynasty Equity in 2023 valued between £82 million and £164 million.
FSG statement and CEO comment
An FSG statement last week said: "An investment consortium led, managed and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club."
Chief executive Billy Hogan told Bloomberg: "I can only refer back to the statement from FSG last week that we have been approached by a consortium that's led, managed and represented by Amit Bhatia for a strategic minority investment in the club. And I wouldn't say anything other than that at this point."
Mittal family sports portfolio
The Mittal family, Bhatia's in-laws, have an expanding portfolio of sports clubs. Lakshmi's son Aditya Mittal invested $1 billion to become co-owner of the NBA's Boston Celtics, while he fell short in a recent attempt to acquire the NFL's Seattle Seahawks.
Additionally, a 75 per cent stake in Indian Premier League franchise Rajasthan Royals changed hands for $1.65 billion.
Liverpool are currently in the United States for pre-season preparations ahead of Andoni Iraola's first campaign as manager. They recently defeated Sunderland 4-2, and club legends Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler helped unveil the new away strip in New York City before a friendly against Wrexham.
