Alton Towers, the UK's largest theme park, has been named the world's 'most disappointing' tourist attraction for the second consecutive year. New research analyzing nearly 100,000 reviews of 200 landmarks worldwide found that 38.2% of Alton Towers reviews reported a negative experience. Visitors complained about overcrowding, expensive prices, misleading ticket information, and costly add-ons for food, drink, and park access.
Visitor Complaints
Of those polled, 15% raised concerns about value for money. Many cited overcrowding as a major issue. One TripAdvisor reviewer wrote: 'Never been so scared in my life... at the prospect of spending £300 for absolutely nothing! Crushed car park, useless signage, half-hour walk to the entrance.' Another said: 'The worst experience ever! The rides have ridiculous wait times, if they're not broken down. Total waste of money.'
Pricing and Capacity
Alton Towers day tickets start from £29 when booked online in advance, compared to £68 at the gate. Children under 90cm enter free. The park welcomes around 1.5 million visitors annually, with a peak daily capacity of 15,000 people.
Global Rankings
Following Alton Towers, the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta and Horseshoe Casino in Louisiana ranked second and third. The Széchenyi Baths in Budapest and Ripley's Aquarium of Canada in Toronto completed the top five.
Park Response
An Alton Towers Resort spokesperson said: 'We're committed to delivering great days out and continuously improving the guest experience. While peak periods can be busy, we provide tools such as live queue-time information and crowd calendars. Direct guest feedback remains positive, with record satisfaction scores achieved in 2025.
