Microsoft is working to resolve a widespread outage that has taken down the Xbox ecosystem, raising fresh concerns about the growing shift to all-digital gaming. The issue, first reported around 4:10am on Thursday, July 27, 2026, has been acknowledged by Microsoft, which identified the problem at 3:50pm but has not yet provided a fix timeline.
Outage Details
According to the Xbox Status page, 'major outages' are affecting Account & Profile, Store & Subscriptions, Games & Gaming, and Apps & Mobile. Under Games & Gaming, the page states: 'You may have problems playing your digital games right now.' The outage also affects disc-based games, meaning physical copies are not a workaround.
Microsoft's Response
Xbox Support posted on X: 'We are aware that some users are encountering errors when attempting to sign in, see your game library, or launch games. Our engineers are actively working to mitigate the issue.' A follow-up three hours later added: 'Just checking in on the game library, sign-in, and game launch issue. We know this has been going on a while and appreciate your patience while our teams keep working on it.'
GameCentral Testing
GameCentral tested an Xbox Series X and found that while some games booted, others failed to load with no apparent pattern. The incident underscores how access to digital games depends on console manufacturers' online systems—and even physical discs are not immune as the industry pushes toward an all-digital landscape.
This comes shortly after Sony's decision to abandon PlayStation game discs after 2027 and recent PlayStation Network outages that blocked online services. Critics argue that the trend erodes consumer control over purchased games, as outages can render libraries inaccessible at any time.
