The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued updated heat health alerts across seven regions in England as the country experiences its fourth heatwave of the year. Forecasts indicate temperatures could reach up to 33°C in some areas, with the peak expected on Wednesday, July 29.
Alerts Upgraded and Issued
An amber heat-health alert, warning of likely significant impacts on health and social care services, has been issued for the East Midlands, East of England, South East, and London. This replaces the previous yellow alert for these regions. The amber warning will be in force from 9am on Wednesday, July 29, until 9am on Thursday, July 30.
Yellow alerts have been issued for Yorkshire and the Humber, West Midlands, and South West for the same period, indicating possible impacts across health and social care services. No heat-health alerts are currently in place for the North East and North West.
Health Risks and Wildfire Warning
The UKHSA stated that rising temperatures could increase health risks over the coming days, particularly for vulnerable groups. The Met Office has also warned of the potential for wildfires as conditions become warmer and drier.
In its forecast for the North West, the Met Office said: "Overcast for much of the day on Tuesday with outbreaks of rain and drizzle, the heaviest of which will be across the north of the region. Temperatures near average. Maximum temperature 23°C." It added: "The unsettled theme conditions into the rest of the week. There will be some warm sunshine at times. However, showers are also likely, especially in the north. Temperatures near average."
