New weather charts indicate that temperatures could plunge below 10C in parts of the UK next Tuesday (August 11), with some northern areas experiencing lows of 6C. The cold snap follows a prolonged period of hot weather and is expected to affect the entire country at around 6am.
Northern regions hardest hit
Scotland and the north east of England will be most affected by the cold chill, according to weather maps from WXCharts.com. The south of the country, including London, the east and south east, may not see temperatures rise above 15C. The rest of the country, especially northern areas, will experience much colder weather, with temperatures ranging from lows of 6C to 10C.
Met Office forecast
A long-range forecast from the Met Office covering August 11 said northwestern parts will see some spells of rain and stronger winds. It also read: "Further into August, lower pressure may start to track further south or east."
This means there is a greater chance of frontal systems or thundery interludes to affect southern and eastern areas in comparison to recent weeks, though rainfall amounts could be quite variable with some areas still seeing relatively little. "For the most part, temperatures look to remain above average, especially in the south, and perhaps turning very warm or hot."
Rain warnings in Scotland
The Met Office has also said heavy rain could hit the north of the UK today, and a yellow weather warning is currently in place in several Scottish areas, where showers could give 15-25mm of rain in 1-2 hours, and perhaps 40mm in a few places, over 3-6 hours.
