After a summer of exceptionally hot weather and successive heatwaves, temperatures could take a noticeable dip across parts of the UK later this month, with weather maps predicting some northern areas potentially falling below 5C.
Cold snap forecast for Saturday
New weather maps from WXCharts indicate that parts of northern Scotland could see temperatures of 2C at about 6am on Saturday, August 22. This is the case particularly across parts of northern Scotland, including areas around Stirling and Perth and Kinross.
Several other areas are also forecast to see temperatures of 3C and 4C across northern Scotland. Temperatures could also fall to 5C across parts of northern England and southern Scotland, including Cumbria, Yorkshire and Dumfries and Galloway.
Met Office outlook
Separately, the Met Office's long-range forecast for the period of August 21 to August 30 reads: "A rather changeable period is likely, with many parts of the UK seeing showers or perhaps some longer spells of rain.
"However, there will be some drier interludes as high pressure moves across the UK at times. There is also a chance that deeper Atlantic lows could lead to periods of widespread rain and strong winds at times, while some outbreaks of thunderstorms are also possible.
"Temperatures are more likely to be above normal than below overall, though the possibility of widespread or exceptional heat is lower than in recent weeks."
Areas under 5C
The cooler temperatures are also expected to persist later into the day. The 6 areas set to be under 5C according to WXCharts are Aberdeenshire, Moray, Highland, Angus, Perth and Kinross, and Argyll and Bute.
