UK weather maps: 78 counties below 10C as chill looms

Weather forecasting models suggest Brits could face a surprise chill at the start of next month, with daytime temperatures dropping into the single digits across most of the country. The GFS model first shows the mercury plunging on September 2 with afternoon highs of just 15-16C in southern areas, and temperatures possibly dropping as low as 6-7C in parts of Scotland and northern England.

Cooler conditions expected on September 3 and 4

Even cooler conditions could follow on September 3 as the weather model shows minimum possible temperatures dropping below 10C in most of the UK at midday. Only the east and south-east are shown as above 10C, with measly highs of 12C.

By 6pm on September 3, the maps show highs of just 15C in the south-east, 13C in South Wales, 12C in Northern Ireland and 11C in central Scotland.

Further cool conditions are expected on September 4 with temperatures at midday once again possibly remaining below 10C for most of the country, and only rising to highs of 14C in central and eastern England by 6pm.

Temperature anomaly maps for this period show the UK shaded in areas of blue. This indicates that temperatures are expected to be well below the seasonal average.

In total, the data shows as many as 78 counties across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland could see daytime temperatures drop below 10C at the start of September.

Met Office weather forecast

The Met Office says “changeable” conditions are expected at the end of this month and the start of September, with rain and even thunderstorms on the cards.

The Met Office forecast for August 26 to September 4 states: “A relatively unsettled and changeable start of this period, as showers or longer spells of rain are possible across many parts of the UK.

“Some heavy bursts and thunderstorms are likely at times. Thereafter, it will likely remain changeable through the rest of August and into early September, with rainfall amounts probably above average for the time year and the potential for some stronger winds at times.”
