Britain could be hit by a sharp September chill in a matter of days, with weather maps turning icy blue as temperatures plunge as low as 2C. The latest maps from WXCharts show a pool of much colder air sweeping across the UK by next Thursday (September 10), with Scotland bearing the brunt of the lowest temperatures.
Widespread lows across Scotland and northern England
Minimum-temperature charts for 6am show widespread lows of between 2C and 5C across large parts of Scotland, while the mercury also tumbles across northern England. The coldest weather appears over central and northern Scotland, where the model displays several 2C readings, alongside extensive areas of 3C and 4C.
A further weather map, showing temperatures at midday on September 10, shows much colder air sweeping across the UK while warmer conditions remain across much of Europe. The contrast is particularly striking, with oranges and reds dominating eastern Europe while Britain sits beneath greens and blues.
Regional temperature breakdown
The most severe chill is concentrated across Scotland, where the map shows 2C, 3C, 4C and 5C readings stretching from the Highlands towards the Borders. Northern England is considerably cooler than the south too, with parts of Cumbria dropping to around 5C, while much of northern England sits between roughly 6C and 8C.
Wales is generally shown at around 7C to 9C, although some higher and more northerly areas come close to 6C. Northern Ireland also sits between 7C and 9C, while the Midlands are generally forecast lows of around 7C to 9C.
Met Office outlook and affected areas
The Met Office weather forecast for September 7-16 says: "Overall, a fairly unsettled period is likely, with many places seeing showers or longer spells of rain at times, interspersed by drier periods. Rain will likely be most frequent across northern and western areas, while the south and east are more likely to see longer drier interludes. There is also the potential for some strong and gusty winds, particularly in the northwest. Temperatures are likely to be near average, although brief warm or very warm spells are possible, especially in the south."
The latest maps show a stark temperature contrast between a cooler UK and much warmer Europe. The 15 UK areas set to plunge below 6C are Highland, Moray, Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen, Angus, Perth and Kinross, Stirling, Argyll and Bute, West Dunbartonshire, East Dunbartonshire, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, Scottish Borders, Dumfries and Galloway, and Cumbria.
