UK snow forecast: Five areas to turn white on Met Office maps

Snow showers are set to hit parts of Scotland this week after the Met Office issued a new forecast for the hours from Wednesday evening. The wintry weather is expected to affect areas including Inverness, Aberdeen, Banff, Perth and Stirling, with the band of snow heading westwards from around 7pm on Wednesday until roughly 4am on Thursday.

Heaviest flurries near Aviemore

At its heaviest, the snow is forecast to fall at a rate of up to 4mm an hour, with the most significant flurries expected near Aviemore early on Thursday morning. The forecaster said the bad weather is likely to continue into the early hours of Thursday.

In more southerly parts of Britain, the coming week is expected to bring wetter weather. Met Office Chief Forecaster Chris Bulmer said: "For many, this weekend brings a window of dry and bright autumn weather, with some sunny spells and light winds as high pressure stays dominant. Overnight may feel particularly chilly, and those in eastern and southeastern areas should watch out for some heavy showers."

Change in weather patterns expected

Bulmer added: "There are signs that high pressure will loosen its grip through next week, allowing for lower pressure and Atlantic weather systems to have more influence by the end of the week, increasing the chance of spells of wet and windy weather for all areas."

He noted that there is still some uncertainty in the likely change in weather patterns through next week, with details expected to become clearer over the coming days.
