The UK is bracing for a fifth heatwave as temperatures are forecast to reach 36C, prompting health alerts and raising concerns over drought and wildfires.
Heatwave and Health Alerts
The Met Office has warned it will be getting "hotter throughout this week," with temperatures already close to 30C on Monday. The mercury is expected to climb to highs of 36C, with the hottest day likely on Thursday. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued heat health alerts across seven areas in England, including London, the South East, and the Midlands, warning of "significant impacts" on health and social care services.
Drought and Water Restrictions
Half of England and all of Wales are now in drought, and more regions could be added when the National Drought Group meets. Over 25 million people face water use restrictions, with hosepipe bans in place for all South East Water and Thames Water customers. Southern Water has applied for a Drought Order to extend bans to car washing and swimming pools.
Wildfires and Records
The dry weather has fueled wildfires, including a major blaze in the New Forest that shut a 12-mile stretch of the A31. Firefighters are battling the fire, which started from a lorry fire and spread to heathland. This year has seen 33 days with temperatures exceeding 30C, and a record of 34 days set in 1995 could be broken. It is also the first year on record where temperatures of 35C have been recorded in three consecutive months (May, June, July).
