UK Households Urged to Stockpile 7 Items for Thunderstorms

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across most of England and Scotland on Friday, prompting households to prepare emergency flood kits containing seven key items. The warning, which covers large parts of the UK, brings a risk of flooding, lightning damage, and hail.

Warning Details and Affected Areas

In England, the warning is active from midnight until 10am on Friday. In Scotland, it remains in place for a full 24 hours, from midnight to midnight. The affected regions include all of northern England, all of Scotland, most of Wales, most of southwest England, and the Midlands. The Met Office cautioned that many areas may escape the worst, but thunderstorms could cause disruption during Thursday night and into Friday morning.

The forecaster warned that flooding could hit homes and businesses, with thunderstorms bringing disruption, building damage, lightning strikes, and hail. As part of the advisory, the Met Office stated: "Consider if your location is at risk of flash flooding. If so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit."

Seven Essential Items for an Emergency Flood Kit

Households are urged to stock up on the following seven items for their emergency flood kit:

  • Insurance documents and a list of contact numbers
  • Torch and spare batteries
  • First aid kit and any prescription medicines
  • Warm waterproof clothes and blankets
  • Bottled water and snacks
  • Battery or wind-up radio
  • Supplies for looking after any babies or pets

Additional Flood Plan Recommendations

The Met Office also advised creating a flood plan, which can be downloaded from local flood agencies or councils. Key elements of a flood plan include:

  • A list of useful contact numbers, including local council, utility providers, and insurance company
  • Instructions on how to shut off electricity or gas supply
  • Moving valuable belongings to a safe place
  • Identifying what needs to be moved to safety during a flood, such as pets, car, and furniture
  • Identifying who could offer help
  • Offering assistance to vulnerable friends or neighbours

The Met Office's advice comes as part of a broader warning covering 75 areas across the UK. Residents in affected regions are encouraged to take proactive steps to protect their homes and families.
