UK households are being urged to bleed their radiators before September begins, a simple task that can help reduce heating costs as cooler weather approaches.
While the UK remains in the summer season, autumn is fast approaching, meaning households will soon turn on their heating systems to maintain warmth. This could result in higher energy costs, but completing one task before September can help cut bills when the autumn period arrives.
Why bleeding radiators matters
Bleeding radiators while the system is switched off helps restore efficiency, according to Selectra, which advises doing this in August. The company stated: "Bleeding your radiators costs nothing, yet it can noticeably cut what you pay to heat your home."
The task requires only a radiator bleed key and a cloth or small container. Begin with the radiator closest to the boiler and progress outwards to those furthest away.
How to bleed radiators correctly
Position the container beneath the bleed valve at the top corner of the radiator, then turn the key gradually until the hissing sound of escaping air ceases and water starts to trickle out steadily, without any bubbles. At this stage, close it once more.
Carry out this procedure on every radiator throughout the property, including those in bathrooms, to help distribute heat more evenly across the home when the heating is activated.

The experts stated: "The advantage of acting now is simple: with the system at rest, you can take your time, you lose no comfort, and you have weeks in hand before the first cold snap. Reaching the switch-on with radiators bled means spending less from the very first day of heating."
The specialists also advised cleaning radiators using microfibre cloths and a vacuum cleaner. This ought to be carried out once ahead of the colder season, with a periodic clean before operation. It might also be sensible to arrange a boiler service before winter arrives, if scheduled, to prevent any problems when temperatures drop.
