After a long, hot summer with little rain in many areas, the UK faces a new threat: flash flooding. Experts warn that prolonged heat has "baked the ground hard," leaving soil unable to absorb sudden downpours, which often follow heatwaves.
Driveways Particularly at Risk
Mary Dhonau OBE, chief executive of the Know Your Flood Risk campaign, said: "Surface water flooding poses a big threat because we've all paved over our drives." Driveways are especially vulnerable as heat has cracked tarmac and shrunk sand between paving blocks, creating channels for water.
Preventive Steps for Homeowners
Homeowners should clear drains and gullies of leaves and silt before storms hit. Experts also advise checking for pooling against house walls and avoiding jet-washing before rain arrives.
