The UK is set for a wetter spell as a 506-mile rain bomb moves in from the west, ending a summer dominated by successive heatwaves. Weather maps from WX Charts show a lengthy area of precipitation stretching from Northern Ireland to Scotland's north-eastern tip, also affecting parts of northern England and western Wales.

Forecast rainfall and timing

The most affected area on the forecast map for around 6am on Monday, September 7, is currently shown as Dumfries and Galloway, where the area has turned dark orange on the map, indicating around 1.7mm of rainfall. The precipitation is forecast to move in from the west.

A WX Charts map for around midday on Sunday, September 6, shows a large area of dark red and purple precipitation moving towards the UK after developing across parts of Ireland.

Met Office long-range outlook

Separately, the Met Office's long range forecast for the period of September 4 to September 13 reads: "Likely remaining unsettled with most areas seeing some showers or longer spells of rain at times, with the main focus for these across northern and western areas, the best of any longer dry spells across the southeast."

"Potential for some strong and gusty winds at times, again the northwest more prone to these. Temperatures are likely to be near average, although some short-lived warm or very warm spells are possible, especially in the south."

Yellow thunderstorm warnings in force

There are currently yellow thunderstorm warnings in place across parts of the UK. One warning is in force until 11.59pm on Sunday, August 30, and covers parts of the East Midlands, East of England, London and South East England, North East England, North West England, South West England, south-west Scotland, Lothian and Borders, Wales, the West Midlands and Yorkshire and Humber.

Another yellow thunderstorm warning is in place until 9pm, covering parts of Central Scotland, Tayside and Fife, North East England, Northern Ireland, Strathclyde, south-west Scotland, Lothian and Borders.
