Luke Shaw admitted he was 'angry and disappointed' with his own performance despite Manchester United securing their first Premier League win of the season with a 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford.
Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick as United came from behind, with Bryan Mbeumo and a controversial Jacob Greaves own goal also helping Michael Carrick's side. The scoreline did not reflect Ipswich's performance, as Gary O'Neil's team showed much energy and spirit throughout the match.
Shaw takes responsibility for opener
Ipswich took the lead in the 29th minute through Leif Davis, who was set up by Abdul Fatawu after the right-winger left Shaw for dust. Shaw's performances this season have come under heavy scrutiny, especially with the Red Devils looking to sign a new left-back before transfer deadline day on Tuesday.
The England international took full responsibility for the opener, telling Sky Sports: 'A really important win. We knew how important it was to win today.
'I am a bit disappointed and angry with myself for the first goal. Extremely happy with the team in the second half, it was really good.
'With the quality in our squad we should have belief all the time we can win games. It always helps when you have someone like Bruno in your team, he can score and create.
'Us as Manchester United should be expected to win here. After last week [the 2-0 defeat at Hull City] we were extremely disappointed and knew we had to react today.
'Of course not the first goal but the way we bounced back after that. We kept the tempo high and kept going for more – that is the thing we can improve this season.'
Difficult afternoon for full-back
The game was all but over at 4-1 when Shaw was subbed off in the 74th minute and replaced by Noussair Mazraoui, but it was another difficult game for the full-back. The 31-year-old is the only natural left-back at Old Trafford and there is fear United will not sign another this summer.
'I think we've done some fantastic business and we've done it very well with the money we've spent,' Carrick told BBC Sport post-match. 'We're making the most of the situation that we have. The spirit is good and they want to fight for each other.'
