Storm Austen: Yellow wind warning cancels Merseyside events

A yellow weather warning for strong winds is in force across Merseyside today (October 23), leading to the cancellation of several events in the region. The Met Office issued the warning, which runs from 10am until 9pm this evening, in connection with Storm Austen, the first named storm of the season.

Storm Austen brings strong winds

Storm Austen could bring winds of up to 80mph across parts of south-west England, with 60-70mph winds anticipated widely throughout the area. The Met Office has also issued an amber warning for wind lasting until 10am today in parts of the UK.

A second storm, Storm Boelo, is set to hit Northern Ireland, Scotland and parts of northern England this weekend, with what the forecaster described as "impactful winds".

Merseyside warning details

For Merseyside, the Met Office states: "Whilst the winds across the warning area are not expected to be as strong as those further south and west, a spell of inland gales is possible with gusts around 45 to 55mph during Friday daytime. In combination with locally heavy rain and many trees still in full leaf, there is potential for some power outages and travel disruption."

A number of events in Merseyside have been cancelled due to the predicted strong winds. The ECHO is sharing the latest updates, pictures and video in its dedicated live blog.
