Homeowners with a driveway or patio are being encouraged to spray white vinegar on the surface to keep spiders at bay during the current spider season in the UK. As temperatures drop, spiders begin moving indoors to mate and search for food and shelter.
Experts say white vinegar acts as a natural spider repellent. Spraying it on the ground near the home, as well as around door frames, windowsills and cracks in walls, can discourage spiders from entering through gaps.
How vinegar deters spiders
Spiders have a keen sense of smell, and the pungent odour of vinegar can overwhelm and disorientate the chemoreceptors on their legs, which they use to navigate. Liam Cleverdon, cleaning expert and Director at Flooring King, said: "Vinegar can also be a handy natural deterrent, working in much the same way as essential oils."
He added: "A simple mix of half white vinegar and half water in a spray bottle is enough; just spritz it around door frames, window ledges, or corners where spiders are likely to enter." Cleverdon warned that vinegar can dull varnished or polished surfaces over time.
Alternative natural remedy
White vinegar is non-toxic, making it safe for indoor use. Another natural option is peppermint oil. Cotton wool balls soaked in the oil can be placed around windowsills, door frames, or gaps in walls and flooring.
Robert Collins, pest control expert at MyJobQuote, said: "Peppermint oil emits a strong scent which repels spiders." He advised: "Add 15 to 20 drops of peppermint oil to a spray bottle with water and spritz this in any areas where you've noticed spiders in the home."
