South Shields and Hebburn markets cancelled due to 41mph winds
South Shields and Hebburn markets cancelled over wind fears

Two markets due to take place in South Tyneside this weekend have been cancelled due to expected strong winds. South Shields Market and Hebburn Food Market have been called off for safety reasons.

Wind forecast and safety concerns

The Met Office predicts wind gusts of up to 41mph in the North East on Saturday. Forecasters say it will be "very windy, with coastal gales possible".

Hebburn Food Festival posted on social media: "With gusts of 38 to 40mph forecast, we've made the call to cancel both South Shields and Hebburn markets this weekend. Remember, its wind gusts NOT wind speed."

Organisers' statement

The statement continued: "Gazebos, stalls and high winds don't mix, and the safety of our traders, visitors and team comes first. It's never a decision we take lightly, especially knowing how much work our traders put in ahead of a market day."

"Thanks for understanding. We'll be back as soon as the weather settles - see you then. Stay safe and hold onto your hats."

Weekend weather outlook

The Met Office says people in the region should expect a chilly start to Saturday, with showers expected through the day and some sunny intervals. Showers will mostly clear by evening, but it will be very windy.

The maximum temperature on Saturday will be 13°C. Sunday will be generally fine and dry, with wind gusts dropping below 20mph.
