Six items UK households should stock up on ahead of winter

National Grid has confirmed it has measures in place for the winter months and is encouraging households to stock up on six vital items in case their power supply fails.

The electricity transmission network said it is prepared "to ensure we're fully prepared for any impact on our electricity network".

What items are households advised to stock?

The six items households are urged to acquire are: a torch, batteries, a power bank or solar charger, a surge protector to guard electric devices from sudden voltage changes, back-up batteries for any electric medical equipment, and a wind-up, battery, or solar radio.

National Grid said it has "additional operational and engineering staff ready and on stand-by" to manage the network.

Advice for vulnerable neighbours and medical equipment users

Households are advised to discuss arrangements with neighbours for cooking and accessing hot water during outages. Vulnerable neighbours should have adequate supplies and emergency contacts.

Those relying on electricity for medical equipment can register with National Grid's Priority Services Register. Residents can also sign up for email alerts about power outages.

What to do during a power cut

During power cuts, households should keep freezers closed, as contents remain safe for up to 12 hours. Sensitive electrical equipment should be switched off to protect against surges that can damage phones, TVs, laptops and tablets.

Residents are also advised to check on elderly, seriously ill or disabled neighbours to ensure they remain warm with sufficient food, drink and medication.
