Sinkhole closes Heywood Road in Prestwich near school

Major road closures have been put in place in Prestwich after a sinkhole opened up on the carriageway.

The 'collapse in the carriageway' opened up on Heywood Road on Wednesday (October 7). Heywood Road and Heys Road are now 'partially shut for safety' in both directions.

50 metre closure in place

Pictures show a large closure in place near the Heys Road roundabout. Three-way temporary traffic lights have been installed on the scene.

Bury Council said a 50 metre closure has been put in place, with Heywood Road closed for 25m north of the roundabout and 25m south of the roundabout. It is shut between Gilmore Drive and Chatsworth Avenue.

Alternative route available

Heys Road is closed between Willingdon Drive and Heywood Road. Council chiefs have urged drivers to allow for extra time when travelling through the area.

They also apologised for inconvenience caused by the road collapse. An alternative route is available via Heywood Road, Scholes Lane, Bury Old Road and vice versa.

In a statement posted on social media, Bury Council said: "HEYWOOD ROAD/HEYS ROAD, PRESTWICH: Both roads are currently partially closed for safety. Heywood Road for a distance of 25m north and south of its junction with Heys Road and Heys Road at its junction with Heywood Road, while investigations and repairs are carried out to a collapse in the carriageway.

"The alternative route will be via Heywood Road, Scholes Lane, Bury Old Road and vice versa. Please allow extra travel time.

"We thank you for your patience and apologise for any inconvenience while this issue is resolved."
