Scotland is bracing for a second yellow thunderstorm warning from the Met Office, which began at 10am on Wednesday, August 5. The warning covers six areas, including Central, Grampian, and parts of the Highlands, and is expected to last until 9pm.
Impacts and Risks
The Met Office warns of slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms that could cause disruption. Sudden flooding may lead to difficult driving conditions and road closures, while power cuts are also possible. The alert highlights the potential for 20-30mm of rain in one to three hours, with up to 50mm in a few places over three to six hours.
The warning states: "Heavy, slow-moving showers and some thunderstorms are likely to break out from late morning. Along with lightning, gusty winds and some hail, these will have the potential to give 20-30mm of rain in one to three hours and perhaps 50mm in a few places over three to six hours." It adds: "This may lead to localised flash flooding, and impacts to the transport network."
Widespread Wet Conditions
Extreme weather like floodwater, lightning strikes, hail, and strong winds could damage buildings. Train and bus delays or cancellations are possible in affected areas. The Met Office predicts continued wet conditions across the country throughout the day and into the evening.
Meteorologist Clare Nasir said: "Showers will drift northward on Wednesday morning with the thunderstorm warning for Aberdeenshire and extending to the west for a time. Towards the west though, outbreaks of rain, a brisk breeze and feeling fresh in the wind but still some warmth in the air where you catch the sunshine in central and southern areas. However, some slow-moving thunderstorms are likely and they will rumble on into the evening and overnight before we yet again see this area of cloud and rain drift southwards. That strong wind keeping things cool into the beginning of Thursday."
Affected Areas
The warning impacts Central, Tayside & Fife (Angus, Perth and Kinross), Grampian (Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray), and Highlands & Eilean Siar (Highland). The Met Office urges those in these areas to be careful while travelling during stormy conditions.
