Sally Nugent issued a warning to BBC Breakfast viewers after a report highlighted people standing dangerously close to the edge of chalk cliffs in East Sussex.
The segment focused on the Seven Sisters cliffs, where people have been seen posing for photos without realising the ground could crumble beneath them at any moment.
Renewed warnings after risky behaviour
Introducing the report, Sally explained: "The Seven Sisters cliffs in East Sussex are home to some of the UK's most breathtaking sights, but there have been renewed warnings for people to keep a safe distance from the edges."
Co-host Jon Kay added that people had been seen "standing perilously close to the edge of cliffs, which can be prone to collapse as they're made of soft chalk".
Resident's chilling warning
During the report, the BBC's Sarah Smith described the cliffs as "soft, crumbly and full of cracks, deep cracks", and called the sight of people near the edge a "worrying sight".
She said: "The main problem of course is that from up here it just looks like the perfect spot for a selfie. The temptation to get closer and closer to the edge, although I'm staying well back."
Smith noted that cliff falls often happen in winter after heavy rain, but warned that "the cliffs can go in any weather without warning".
Carol Smith, a resident of Seaford, said: "I just think it's so scary, you know, people are taking their life in their hands, their chalk cliffs, and they can crumble at any time."
Plea to viewers
After the report, Sally said: "When you see those pictures like that, you can just see how dangerous that is. I wonder if when people are desperately trying to get a really cute selfie, they take another step, and then another step, and they don't quite realise how close to the edge they are."
Jon added: "I think sometimes when you're in that situation, you can't see how dangerous it is because you're where you are. It's only the people who are further afield."
Sally concluded: "Yes, until we send up a drone and show you how scary it is, so don't do it!"
