The Red Arrows have been forced to cancel three UK displays after extreme weather left the team stranded in North America. The RAF aerobatic team, which flew over New York Harbour on July 4 to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, has seen its return delayed by prolonged poor weather in north-eastern Canada.
Delayed return and cancelled events
The aircraft remain in North America, with the Atlantic crossing now expected late next week, the RAF confirmed on Saturday. This has led to cancellations at Airbourne: Eastbourne International Airshow (August 14-16), the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo flypast (August 15), and the start of Lyme Regis RNLI Lifeboat Week (August 16).
Lyme Regis disappointment
Mayor of Lyme Regis Philip Evans said he was “distraught” that the team would not appear, especially as the visit was to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Lyme Lifeboat. The town had raised £10,000 through the Lyme Regis Red Arrows 100 Club, with all donations to be refunded. Mr Evans noted the cancellation was “a particular disappointment for the RNLI”.
Safety first, says RAF
Wing Commander Sasha Nash, chief of the RAF Aerobatic Team, apologised for the cancellations but stressed that “safety is the only factor that will determine the timing of the team’s return from Canada”. Eastbourne Borough Council expressed understanding and announced extra displays, including the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress Sally B, to compensate.
The Red Arrows are expected to resume their schedule later this month, with a display at Cromer Carnival on August 19 still planned.
