The 2023 Atlantic Salmon 50p coin has become the rarest standard circulating 50p in UK history, with a mintage of just 200,000, making it more scarce than the famous 2009 Kew Gardens piece (210,000 minted). Coin experts say it can fetch up to £80 — about 160 times its face value.
Why the Atlantic Salmon 50p Is So Valuable
The coin was introduced to celebrate King Charles III and his commitment to nature conservation. It features a portrait of the King by Martin Jennings and, crucially, lacks the small crown privy mark found on versions in annual sets, making the circulated version exceptionally rare.
In a TikTok video, coin expert @CoinCollectingWizard explained: "You can find this worth £80. About 160 times its face value is the 2023 Atlantic Salmon 50p coin."
Collector Demand and Market Value
According to the expert, recent eBay sales for this coin have fetched £70–£80, with some reports even higher depending on condition and demand. He noted: "Only the version dated 2023 and lacking the small crown privy mark found in annual sets is truly rare circulated pieces with this design entered everyday use and now command collector interest."
He added: "If yours does not have a Tudor Crown privy mark, it's worth £80, not the version sold in mint sets which is more common and typically worth less."
How Many Are in Circulation?
The Royal Mint confirmed a mintage of 200,000 for public use. ChangeChecker data suggests that one in every 335 UK households could potentially have one of these coins in their pocket. A survey also found that 30% of Brits have landed one of these 2023 Atlantic Salmon coins while handling their change.
