Quayside Makers Markets, held outside the Quayside shopping centre in MediaCityUK, has cancelled all its events this weekend due to weather warnings associated with Storm Boelo.
The Met Office has issued a yellow wind alert from 12pm on Saturday until 9pm Sunday across the whole of the north, with forecasts of 'very windy and wet' conditions. The storm could bring widespread gusts of 60 to 70 mph, potentially rising to 80 mph in exposed coastal areas.
Storm Austen has also brought strong winds today, with a separate yellow weather warning in place until 9pm this evening.
Organisers announce cancellation on social media
In a social media post, organisers of the Salford Quays event apologised for the disappointment but said the safety of its traders, staff and visitors was of the most importance.
The post read: "Unfortunately, we’ve had to make the difficult decision to cancel this weekend’s Quayside Makers Market on both Saturday and Sunday due to the forecasted high winds.
"The safety of our amazing traders, visitors and staff will always be our number one priority, and with the weather conditions looking unsafe, we feel this is the right decision. We’re so sorry for any disappointment and want to thank you all for your continued support and understanding."
Impact on traders and other attractions
The Quayside Makers Markets were first held in 2020, with this weekend's offering initially set to feature over 50 local traders spanning food and gifts, as well as live music, facepainting, and craft sessions.
Chester Zoo has also closed today (October 23) due to the 'really strong winds', with bosses apologising for the disruption. The Bee Network has issued warnings that bus, tram and train services may be impacted by the weather.
