Newport Fire: Crews Contain Blaze at Star Trading Estate

A large industrial fire broke out in the early hours at Star Trading Estate in Caerleon, Newport. Emergency services arrived around 2:40am after residents reported hearing popping sounds and smelling smoke.

The site was quickly evacuated, and all people were accounted for. The public were told to stay away from the area, while firefighters worked to contain the flames.

Ten fire engines called to the scene

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Gwent Police attended the incident, with ten fire engines, three water bowsers, an aerial ladder platform, and specialist equipment deployed. Dozens of firefighters tackled the blaze for hours, and smoke could be seen for miles, with a black plume rising high above the site.

People in the surrounding area were urged to keep windows and doors closed, and a local cafe on the trading estate decided to close due to the situation. Images shared on social media showed the extent of the smoke, with concerns that flames could spread.

Fire successfully contained

After hours of firefighting, the blaze was contained. Crews have been withdrawn from the scene, though monitoring will continue.

In an update, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "The incident has been successfully contained. While main firefighting operations are complete, crews will continue to monitor the site. It is expected to smoulder for some time."

No official reason has yet been given for the fire. With the main firefighting operation complete, the investigation into the cause is now under way.
