A large wildfire is raging in the New Forest, Hampshire, after a lorry fire on the A31 spread to heathland, forcing police to tell drivers to leave their vehicles "if they want to stay alive".
The blaze broke out just after 5:24pm on Sunday near Forest Corner, with 26 fire crews now working to extinguish it. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Service have a "significant presence in the area as crews work to bring the fire under control", and firefighters are expected to remain on site "for the foreseeable future".
Road closures and diversions
The A31 remains closed in both directions. The westbound carriageway is shut between M27 J2 (Ower) and the A338 (Ringwood), and the eastbound carriageway is closed between the A338 and M27 J1 (Cadnam). Motorists are advised to avoid the area and follow diversion signs.
Diversion routes are in place for both eastbound and westbound traffic, directing drivers through local roads including the A338, A3060, A35, and A326.
Firefighting operation
Fire crews are laying a "significant length of hose" from Hightown Lake to the scene, which may need to pass across or through private properties. Residents whose homes may be affected will be contacted directly by crews.
Hampshire fire crews are supported by colleagues from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service. A total of 26 fire engines, four water carriers, six off-road vehicles, and multiple command vehicles are on scene.
Public urged to stay away
The fire service has urged locals to close all doors and windows due to thick smoke, which has been visible for miles. Drivers have been advised to avoid the area to allow emergency crews to work safely.
There is currently no need for properties to be evacuated, but residents have been told their homes may be affected by the firefighting operation.
