Natural spider deterrent stops insects entering home

Spider season is approaching, and for the thousands of people in Wales with arachnophobia, it can be a dreaded time. Arachnophobia is one of the most common phobias in the UK, affecting an estimated one in three women and one in eight men.

Why Spiders Come Indoors

From late August into September, more spiders appear inside homes as mating season begins, peaking in mid-October. Falling temperatures drive them indoors seeking warm, dry spots to mate.

Households have been advised to keep windows closed from 7pm during this period, as that's when spiders are most likely to enter.

Expert Advice and a Simple Solution

Alan Reid, a window specialist at Art Windows and Doors, warned: "Male house spiders and false widows are on the move, and homes with open windows are at risk of infestation. Now is the time to seal gaps and shut windows before spider season peaks."

Another method uses a common kitchen product. Plymouth mother Danielle shared her trick on TikTok, applying Astonish Kitchen Cleaner Spray along window gaps and sills. She captioned the video: "When spider season is upon us and you've already had a huge unwanted eight-legged visitor in the house. Astonish saving the day!"

The spray, available at supermarkets or Ocado for £1.30, has a "zesty lemon scent" and tackles "grease and kitchen grime with ease." Danielle explained: "When I use it I don't see any spiders! I use it every couple of days on all of my windows and doors."

Other Natural Deterrents

Pest UK confirms spiders loathe strong fragrances like lemons, limes, oranges, eucalyptus oil, and tea tree oil. Vinegar also repels them, though some dislike its smell.

You can make your own deterrent by mixing half a lemon with water in a spray bottle and applying it to entry points.

Viewers shared tips: one used lavender and peppermint oil on cotton pads, another placed conkers in corners, and someone else burned lavender candles. To prevent spiders, declutter, store food properly, vacuum regularly, and remove webs.
