A mum has shared advice for households after discovering that a build-up of lint in her tumble dryer vent was causing her clothes to come out creased. The issue, which also posed a fire risk, was resolved after she cleaned the vent thoroughly.
Discovery of the Problem
In a post on Reddit, the mum explained that she had been frustrated by her clothes emerging from the dryer with wrinkles, despite her usual routine of folding them immediately. She said: "We're a family of four and I've got laundry down to a science. I fold and put away immediately, and it makes life so much easier than laundry basket hell. Recently, I found that if I didn't fold the minute [the dryer was finished], everything had really awful wrinkles. Especially my tablecloth, which I'm generally on top of."
She found that the dryer was overheating due to a significant lint build-up in the vent, which prevented proper ventilation. The mum described the amount of lint as a "fire-hazard amount" and noted that the fuse blew, causing the dryer to stop working. After cleaning the vent, the dryer functioned better and the wrinkle issue was resolved.
Public Response and Safety Advice
The post went viral, prompting other users to check their own appliances. One commenter wrote: "This has been happening to me, and I felt crazy. It's been impossible to catch the clothes before they wrinkle. I'm going to check the vent. Thank you!" Another added: "I need to mention this to my husband (he abhors wrinkles) and he'll finally move the dryer so I can reach the vent hose. It's only been on my to-do list for six months to clean it out."
Excess lint in a tumble dryer can cause more than just wrinkled clothes. It can restrict ventilation, leading to overheating, and in extreme cases, it can cause the appliance to catch fire. To maintain safety and efficiency, it is recommended to clean the filter after every use. General cleaning tips include removing the filter, peeling off lint, washing the mesh with warm water if there is waxy residue, and drying it completely before replacing it. For a deeper clean, users can vacuum the filter housing with a crevice attachment and wipe the area with a damp cloth.
Exact instructions may vary between appliances, so it is always advisable to consult the manual for specific guidance.
