The Met Office has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning covering the whole of Wales on Sunday, bringing hail, frequent lightning and strong winds as the summer holidays end on a wet and stormy note.
The warning, in force from midday until 11.59pm, is the latest in a series of alerts that have disrupted the August bank holiday weekend. Some local events planned for the final bank holiday of a dry and warm summer were cancelled on Saturday after flash flooding in parts of Bridgend.
Heavy showers and gusts expected
The Met Office said: "Showers, heavy and thundery, will reach southwest England and Wales later Sunday morning before spreading and developing more widely during the afternoon."
While some areas will miss the heaviest showers, where they occur 10-15mm of rain is possible in less than an hour, with 30-40mm possible over several hours, these larger totals most likely for parts of north and northwest England and southwest Scotland.
"Hail, frequent lightning and, in southern parts of England and Wales, wind gusts of 35-45mph will be additional hazards," the forecaster added. "Heaviest showers and thunderstorms will become more isolated later in the evening."
Travel disruption and flooding risks
Forecasters warn driving conditions are likely to be affected, with journeys expected to take longer due to spray, standing water and potentially hail. Delays to train services are also possible.
Flooding of homes and businesses is possible, with a risk of damage to buildings from lightning strikes. Power cuts could also occur.
The heavy and thundery showers will continue through the evening before slowly easing overnight with clear spells developing. Monday looks set to be the nicest day of the bank holiday weekend.
