Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to replace the sunshine and blue skies Wales has enjoyed in recent bank holidays, with the weekend forecast to feel like autumn has come early.
The bank holiday in late May brought the first of many heatwaves, but the weather is forecast to take a turn later this week. The late summer bank holiday on Monday, August 31, is expected to be wet across the UK.
Weather warnings issued for Wales
Two consecutive weather warnings have been issued this week for Wales as thunderstorms could cause flooding across the country on Wednesday and Thursday. Strong winds are also possible across the weekend.
The Met Office forecast for the last summer bank holiday and the first week of September for the UK states: "An unsettled start to this period, as showers or longer spells of rain are possible across many parts of the UK."
Changeable conditions into early September
"Some heavy rain is likely, perhaps with some thunderstorms too," the forecast continues. "It will likely remain changeable into early September, with rainfall amounts probably above average for the time of year and the potential for some strong winds at times."
However, the summer weather may not be entirely behind us. The Met Office notes that "some drier, more settled interludes could develop at times," with temperatures likely to be near average, although "some short-lived warm or hot spells are possible, especially in the south."
