Met Office warns 38 UK areas of power cuts, winds Friday

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning covering 38 areas of England and Wales, with strong winds expected to bring possible power cuts, loss of mobile phone signal and travel disruption on Friday.

The warning begins at midnight on Friday, October 24, and lasts until 12 midday the same day. Affected areas include Brighton, Southampton, Bristol, Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Cardiff.

What the Met Office warning says

In its warning, the Met Office said: "A period of strong winds may lead to damaging gusts and transport disruption." It added: "There is a slight chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage."

The warning also notes: "There is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties."

Advice for households

The Met Office is advising households to prepare for possible power loss and flooding by making a plan, assembling an emergency kit and gathering essential items such as a mobile phone battery pack, torches and batteries.

In its advice, it says: "People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It's easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items."

It also advises: "Prepare to protect your property and people from injury. Check for loose items outside your home and plan how you could secure them. Items include: bins, garden furniture, trampolines, tents, sheds, and fences."
