The Met Office has updated its yellow thunderstorm warning for the North East, with some areas now excluded but others still impacted until 1pm on Thursday.
Heavy rain has fallen overnight and continued into the morning, marking a shift from last week's heatwave. Commuters faced wet conditions as the weather changed.
Areas No Longer in Warning Zone
Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside and Sunderland are no longer in the warning area for thunderstorms. However, Darlington and Teesside remain covered by the alert.
The Met Office warns that residents in affected areas could face power cuts and lightning strikes.
Forecast Details and Risks
The Met Office stated: "Heavy showers and some thunderstorms are expected to continue across northern England and north Wales this morning before easing this afternoon. These are likely to bring 15 to 20 mm in less than an hour in a few places, with 30-40 mm possible over several hours."
"These accumulations may lead to a few places seeing some flooding. Alongside the rain, there are additional hazards of lightning and hail," the Met Office added.
Driving conditions are expected to be affected by spray, standing water and hail, leading to longer journey times. Flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible, with some damage to buildings or structures. Lightning strikes could also cause damage and short-term loss of power. Delays to train services are possible.
Preparedness Advice
Due to the prolonged dry weather, the ground is particularly hard, meaning water is less likely to drain. People are warned to consider if their location is at risk of flash flooding.
The Met Office advises people to prepare by gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items. If outside and hearing thunder, people should find a safe enclosed shelter such as a car, avoid sheltering under or near trees or other structures that may be struck by lightning, and move to lower ground if possible.
