The Met Office has issued its weather verdict for October, indicating that temperatures are likely to be near or slightly above average for the time of year. The forecast comes as the UK transitions from a period of wet weather into a new month that could bring warmer and drier conditions.
According to the national forecaster, high pressure will dominate the start of October, which means warm and brighter days could be on the horizon. This dry spell follows a week of wet weather, marking a sharp change from the blistering heat experienced over the summer months.
What the Met Office says about early October
In its forecast, the Met Office stated: "High pressure will likely be in place over southern UK through the first few days of this period. This means plenty of dry weather to be had here, albeit with some chilly nights and overnight and morning fog in places."
In the north, a more changeable pattern is expected to continue, with occasional rain and windy conditions at times. The Met Office added: "Broadly changeable weather patterns look to continue through to mid-month, with ridges of high pressure extending from the southwest, interspersed by Atlantic frontal systems."
Temperatures and wind potential
The forecaster also noted the potential for windy weather more widely, saying: "These could be associated with quite deep and fast-moving depressions, bringing the potential for windy weather more widely, but perhaps more likely in the north."
On temperatures, the Met Office concluded: "Temperatures probably near or slightly above normal overall, but with some day to day variations." This week, temperatures remain mild, sitting comfortably around 18C to 20C, which is mild for this time of year.
