The Met Office has revealed the exact dates when warmer conditions could return to the UK in its latest 10-day long-range forecast, following several days of thunderstorm warnings and heavy rain across the country.
Yellow weather warnings have been in force over recent days, with thunderstorms and heavy rain affecting many areas. The wet weather is expected to continue into the weekend, with an unsettled pattern forecast from Sunday (August 30) through to Tuesday (September 1).
Unsettled start to September
According to the Met Office, the period from Sunday to Tuesday will remain "unsettled throughout with showers, these locally heavy and with thundery." Conditions will stay warm initially, but turn fresher as winds shift to a westerly and strengthen from Monday.
However, the long-range forecast between September 4 and September 13 suggests the possibility of "warmer-than-normal conditions" at times during the month.
Wetter than average in the northwest
The forecast for September 4 to September 13 reads: "Likely remaining unsettled with showers or longer spells of rain across all areas at times. Rainfall amounts will probably be above average for the time of year across many areas with the wettest conditions in the northwest."
It adds: "Potential for some strong winds at times. Some drier and more settled interludes could develop, perhaps becoming longer in duration across southern areas later in this period."
Warm spells possible in the south
Temperatures are expected to stay close to seasonal averages throughout the month, although some southern areas could experience periods of warmer-than-normal conditions. The Met Office noted: "Some short-lived warm or very warm spells are possible, especially in the south."
For the remainder of September, the outlook suggests a mixed weather pattern from mid-month, with wetter conditions initially expected in northwestern areas and longer dry spells more likely in the southeast. Forecast signals become less certain later in the month, although the chances of more prolonged settled and dry weather increase, with temperatures expected to remain around average and the possibility of warm spells, particularly across southern regions.
