Met Office names 19 areas facing rain on Sunday - full list

Rain is set to hit several British areas this weekend as the UK’s fifth heatwave of the year comes to an end for many. On Sunday, 19 areas across the nation are expected to see some much-needed rainfall, after August has so far recorded just 5% of its average expected rainfall.

Heavy Rain Expected Early Sunday

Following Thursday’s scorching temperatures, which saw the hottest day of 2026 so far being declared, a dramatic change is on the way this weekend. By tomorrow, Sunday, August 16, rain is expected to fall in several areas - including some where drought has been declared earlier this summer.

Met Office weather maps suggest that, at 5.30am tomorrow, large swathes of north Wales will unveil their curtains to the sound of rain. Gwynedd, Conwy and Ceredigion will receive the brunt of the early morning rainfall. In England, which has also largely been hit by a drought, Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Yorkshire will also see rain showers at this time.

Rain Spreads Across Regions

Maps looking at the forecast for 7.30am suggest the main band of rain will have moved to cover Cumbria, Lancashire and Greater Manchester, with Cheshire and Derbyshire also seeing rain showers. The rain will have moved from north Wales but some central showers could continue to see rain.

Heavy rain will also fall over large swathes of Scotland, with Lanarkshire, Ayrshire, Dumfries and Galloway all forecast for downpours. Argyll and Bute as well as Perth and Kinross will both see heavy rain showers, the maps suggest.

Rain Disperses by Midday

By 11.15am, the rain will have largely dispersed, however, showers are expected in Dorset and Norfolk, the forecast suggests. Intermediate showers will also remain in Scotland.

The Met Office's weather outlook for tomorrow reads: "Rather cloudy with showery light rain across Scotland and Northern Ireland. Dry elsewhere, with warm spells of hazy sunshine. Feeling pleasant for many, with light winds."

The forecaster adds that a front moving south eastwards across the UK on Monday and Tuesday could bring northern areas some rain, however, the chance of rain in the south is small.
