The Met Office has issued an amber extreme heat warning covering 37 areas of England, with temperatures potentially reaching 38C on Thursday, August 13. The alert will be in effect from 9am until 12.59pm the same day.
Heatwave conditions forecast across the UK
Heatwave conditions are forecast for large parts of the country, including Greater Manchester, over the coming days. Many areas are expected to see temperatures surpass 30C, with some set for highs of 38C.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber heat alerts across all regions of England, warning that significant impacts across health and social care services are "likely" due to the warm weather. These alerts came into force at 9am on August 11 and will remain in place until 9pm on Thursday, August 13.
Peak temperatures expected on Thursday
Into Wednesday, August 12, temperatures are expected to climb into the 30s for much of the country. According to Met Office weather, highs of 33C are expected across southern parts of the country, with Greater Manchester and other northern regions expected to reach 32C.
Peak temperatures are then expected on Thursday, with parts of the country forecast to hit the high 30s. Issuing the alert, the Met Office said: "Following a warm night, a spell of very hot weather will affect England on Thursday. The highest temperatures will be in parts of the east, southeast and the Midlands, where 37 or even 38 Celsius could be reached. This may lead to impacts on transport, infrastructure and health."
Areas affected and weekend outlook
The warning covers areas including the East Midlands, East of England, London and South East England, West Midlands, and Yorkshire & Humber. Specific areas include Derby, Leicester, Lincolnshire, Nottingham, Bedford, Cambridge, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Greater London, Oxfordshire, Surrey, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, and South Yorkshire, among others.
Temperatures are expected to drop slightly on Friday, August 14, with temperatures expected to reach 31C across the south of England, according to Met Office weather maps. On Friday, highs of around 23C are forecast across Greater Manchester.
