A yellow weather warning for strong winds has been issued across the Scottish Highlands and Na h-Eileanan Siar, with the Met Office warning that travel disruption is likely on Wednesday, October 14.
The warning was issued on Tuesday, October 13, and will be in force from 10am until 7pm on Wednesday, affecting the Highland and Na h-Eileanan Siar local authority areas.
Gusts of up to 70mph expected
Forecasters expect strong south to south westerly winds to bring gusts of up to 60mph across much of the region, with exposed coastal and hilly areas likely to experience even stronger gusts of wind throughout the day.
The Met Office states: "Strong south to south westerly winds are expected during Wednesday. Gusts of 50 to 60 mph are expected widely, with some exposed coastal and hilly locations seeing gusts of around 70 mph late morning and early afternoon. Winds ease from the west through the late afternoon and early evening."
Travel disruption possible
The strongest winds are expected during the late morning and early afternoon before conditions begin to ease later in the day. Although this could change, and those in the affected areas should keep up to date with the forecast.
Drivers, ferry passengers and those travelling by air have been warned to prepare for possible delays as the weather moves across the north and west of Scotland.
Road users could face longer journey times, particularly on exposed routes and bridges. Additionally high-sided vehicles are likely to be more vulnerable on these types of roads, due to strong gusts.
Bus and train services may also be affected, with some journeys taking longer than usual. Ferry and air travel could experience delays as operators respond to the conditions.
Power cuts and preparation advice
Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving. As well as bus and train timetables if travelling by public transport, amending your travel plans if necessary.
The Met Office has also warned that short-term power cuts and disruption to other services are possible in some areas as a result of the strong winds.
Households are also encouraged to prepare for potential power cuts by gathering essential items in advance. Items such as torches, spare batteries and spare power banks could prove useful if the electricity cuts out.
