The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning across Greater Manchester this evening. The warning is set to come into force at 7pm tonight (Wednesday, August 19) and will last through to 10am tomorrow morning (August 20).
As we come out of yet another heatwave, the British rainy weather has made a return. This week has seen rain finally fall across much of Greater Manchester after one of the direst summers on record.
Thundery showers and additional hazards
Large parts of the UK are set to see heavy rain and showers. Alongside this, the Met Office have also issued a warning that some showers are likely to be thundery, bringing the additional hazards of lightning and hail.
The warning suggests that the impact will be low, but warns the storms are likely to lead to some travel disruption and flash floods in some areas across the North. The warning is extended from Liverpool across to Newcastle upon Tyne and includes Greater Manchester.
Travel disruption and power loss possible
The Met Office predict that there is a chance that driving conditions will be impacted by the rain, amongst other travel warnings such as train disruption. Some flooding is likely to damage businesses and homes. They also warned that some short-term power loss is likely and some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes is possible.
Heavy showers are set to develop this evening, starting in the North West of the country, towards Liverpool, and become more frequent and widespread overnight. By 8pm much of Greater Manchester will be experiencing some level of rainfall.
Rainfall amounts and overnight forecast
Stockport is set to experience the highest amount of rainfall, between 16 to over 32mm per hour. Rochdale, Oldham, Bolton, Tameside and Wigan will also see higher levels of rainfall, between 4-16mm across the boroughs.
By 9pm this evening much of the rain is set to have moved east, however areas such as Rochdale, Manchester, Tameside, Bolton and Oldham are still set to see some rainfall throughout the night. Rain will remain across Bolton for much of the evening until midnight.
At 1am heavy rain will return across Wigan, Bolton, Rochdale and some of Salford, with up to 16mm of rainfall set to fall in the hour. By 2am much of Greater Manchester will be covered in low levels of rain, which will then ease off once again apart from in Wigan where rain will get heavier at 3am.
Heavy rainfall will cover much of Greater Manchester at 4am, with Manchester and Rochdale's rain forecast intensifying, though rain will then ease off until 8am where it once again picks up in some areas of Bolton and much of Wigan.
Temperatures are set to drop to as low as 13 degrees overnight. Light rain is then set to fall across most of Greater Manchester by 10am, when the warning comes to an end, apart from in Rochdale where the borough will see heavy levels of rainfall.
