King Charles has issued a new message following a devastating earthquake in Colombia that killed at least 181 people and left thousands missing. The King and Queen said they are “dreadfully saddened” by the news, praising the Colombian people for their “resilience and strength”.
Earthquake Devastation
The 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck on Monday, according to the country’s president, Abelardo de la Espriella. At least 181 people died, around 2,595 more were injured, and at least 195 remained missing, the president said. However, civilian-run databases suggest the number of missing could be as high as 3,800.
The president also reported that 1,136 homes were destroyed, with more damaged. Authorities said the deaths were concentrated in cities including Cali, Pereira, Manizales and Quibdo, but local leaders and families worried about casualties and damage in rural areas, from where very little information has emerged.
Royal Message
On Tuesday evening, the King shared a new message on his social media account, signed “Charles R”. The message read: “To the people of Colombia,
“My wife and I were so dreadfully saddened to learn of the devastating earthquake that has struck your country, and the tragic loss of life and suffering it has caused.
“At this most difficult of times, our special thoughts are with the bereaved and injured, those awaiting news of family and friends and the emergency responders working tirelessly to support those in need.
“We greatly admire the resilience and strength of the Colombian people, and we send our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences during this most challenging and distressing period. Charles R.”
Rescue Efforts
Soldiers, rescue personnel and families picked through the rubble on Tuesday, passing large pieces of concrete by hand along lines of volunteers. The full extent of the damage and casualties continues to emerge as rescue efforts proceed.
