Japan Earthquake: 7.1 Magnitude Triggers Tsunami Warning

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck near the town of Uto in Kumamoto Prefecture on Japan's southern island of Kyushu on Tuesday afternoon, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported.

The quake triggered a tsunami advisory for coastal areas. It occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) below the sea surface.

The JMA measured the quake at a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 and rated it as level seven on Japan's Shindo scale, the highest possible level of shaking.
