The Foreign Office has issued updated travel advice for those planning trips to Italy and Sicily, highlighting two current risks: wildfires and flight disruption caused by the eruption of Mount Etna.
The advice also covers Vatican City, a popular destination for holidaymakers visiting Rome, and reminds travellers of the importance of travel insurance.
Wildfire risk across Italy
According to the Foreign Office, there is a high risk of wildfires during the summer in Italy as temperatures continue to soar. The updated advice notes that wildfires have already caused widespread devastation in many parts of Europe.
In the UK, wildfire breakouts have also occurred, with Prime Minister Andy Burnham warning against the dangers of BBQs in 'tinderbox' Britain. A nationwide emergency alert was also sent to mobile phones in England and Wales on Friday evening.
Mount Etna eruption disrupts flights
The volcano in Sicily has been active for several days, creating clouds of drifting ash that have forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights. The Foreign Office advises travellers to check with their travel provider or Catania Airport if they are travelling to or from the area.
It also provides information on other active volcanoes in southern Italy, including the Phlegraean Fields west of Naples, which experience regular tremors and can affect airspace during eruptions. National emergency planning is in place for the area.
Travel advice and safety tips
The Foreign Office's website offers safety and security advice covering crime risk and the possibility of paying an access fee when visiting Venice. It also explains that colour-coded alerts—green, yellow, orange, and red—apply to active volcanoes, with Etna currently at yellow.
