London Euston has been named the capital's worst station for toilets, according to a new study of TripAdvisor reviews. Researchers analysed thousands of reviews from stations across the UK and Europe, finding that 63% of reviews about Euston's facilities were negative.
Poor reviews and specific complaints
Euston placed eighth overall in the rankings, with reviewers describing the toilets as dirty, smelly, and poorly maintained. One reviewer branded the men's toilets 'a disgrace'.
Other London stations also fared poorly. Waterloo and Liverpool Street both recorded negative scores of 52%. A visitor to Paddington described the toilets as 'really gross', complaining about sticky floors and toilet seats. The Eurostar terminal at St Pancras International also attracted criticism, while nearby King's Cross performed better.
Victoria Station leads the way
At the other end of the spectrum, Victoria Station was deemed to have the best toilets in London. Only 23% of reviews about its facilities were negative, with some passengers praising the toilets as 'spotless' and saying they were cleaned regularly.
The research also highlighted frustration over toilet charges. Around 65% of all negative reviews mentioned having to pay to use the facilities despite already purchasing train tickets. Victoria, which recently scrapped its payment system, may have benefited from this change.
London outperforms other European cities
Despite Euston's poor showing, London stations generally fared better than those in other European cities. Milan, Glasgow, and Manchester each received worse overall scores.
Libby Mayfield, head of marketing at research company Dark Horse, said: 'Millions of people will pass through the UK and Europe's major train stations this summer, hoping to enjoy the sights and sounds of a leisurely rail journey, but unfortunately this ranking reveals that along with delays and cancellations, anyone needing the loo will have to deal with an extra dose of unpleasantness.'
She added: 'It's a reminder that doing the dirty work isn't easy or glamorous, but if you don't, your reputation ends up going down the toilet.'
