Drivers Urged to Rub Potato on Car Before Thursday

With heavy rain forecast to hit much of the UK by Thursday, drivers are being urged to prepare their cars for significant downpours this week. A YouTuber known as Simple and Fast has shared a trick that 'might save your life' if you're driving in heavy rain: rubbing a cut-in-half potato across your car's windows.

The Potato Hack

The bizarre hack involves cutting a potato in half and rubbing the exposed starchy innards across the windscreen, almost like trying to scrub it clean. When done, the windscreen becomes aquaphobic, resisting water.

In a demonstration using masking tape, the YouTuber divided the windscreen in two, rubbed the potato only on the left side, and then threw a bowl of water over the car. She explained: "As you can see, the right side has drops on it while the left side has none. This is ideal for days where it rains hard and you know that the windows fog up."

Weather Forecast

The Met Office forecast for Tuesday says: "A wet start across many northern and central areas of the country, with rain moving erratically southwards during the day. Turning brighter but fresher from the north."

For Wednesday to Friday, it adds: "Wednesday will be dry in the south, while elsewhere there will be a mix of sunshine and showers. Showers becoming widespread and heavy from Thursday, with a risk of thunder."

UK weather maps and the Met Office are predicting deluges on different days depending on where you live, but much of the UK is expected to see significant rainfall by Thursday. With sunshine and heatwave conditions giving way to heavy rain, drivers are advised to take precautions against sudden intense rainfall.
