Drivers told to make MOT check on bank holiday Monday

UK drivers have been advised to perform a simple MOT check this bank holiday Monday, ahead of a significant change in September. From September 1, '76' number plates will enter the market, expected to generate increased interest in brand new cars.

Buyers may also find attractive deals on used cars in September, as dealers and owners reduce prices to make room for newer models. However, Tim Rodie, automotive expert at Motorpoint, has highlighted that sellers may overlook one detail amid the excitement: their MOT test.

Why checking the MOT matters

Although a car may have a valid MOT, Tim stressed that drivers should verify how much time remains on the certificate. He suggested road users carry out this check over the bank holiday weekend.

According to Tim, those thinking of selling may want to consider having their annual exam completed before listing the car, to give their advertisement an extra boost.

Expert advice for sellers

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Tim said: “If you’re already planning to sell or part-exchange your car in September, use the bank holiday weekend to check exactly when its MOT is due.

“If there are only a few weeks or months left, it may be worth considering having the MOT carried out early, which can be particularly useful if you choose to sell privately.

“A recently passed MOT can give a private buyer more confidence that the car has recently met the required road safety standards, while removing another immediate job and potential expense from their list.

“If you’re selling your car to a retailer or part-exchanging it, having a recently passed MOT may be less important, so check what’s actually required before paying to have it renewed early.”

Impact on resale value

According to WeBuyAnyCar, an MOT test is “one of the key factors” that determines a vehicle’s overall resale value. They explained that cars with at least six months of MOT cover remaining will be considered “higher value” among buyers.

This indicates to buyers that a model is reliable and requires no immediate check-ups once a sale has been agreed. The experts suggested that sellers can expect to secure a moderately lower value if an MOT test certificate expires within two months.
