Brits have been urged not to use disposable barbecues outdoors as temperatures rise and the risk of wildfires increases across the country.
Heatwave Peaks and Fire Risk
The warning comes as parts of England and Wales could reach 33C on Wednesday, with even hotter conditions expected on Thursday as the latest UK heatwave intensifies. Temperatures could climb as high as 38C in some areas, while widespread dry conditions have left parts of the country particularly vulnerable to fires.
Government Considering a Ban
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has now said the Government could consider banning disposable barbecues in an effort to prevent more wildfires. Speaking during a visit to Stevenage, Mr Burnham said a ban was something the Government is "certainly going to consider".
He said: "There is obviously a significant problem of wildfires in the south." Pointing to recent incidents around the country, he added: "The New Forest fire is a great concern; we have seen them in northern areas, as well as Suffolk recently."
Firefighters Battle Blazes
Firefighters have been battling a blaze in the New Forest as hot and dry conditions continue to affect large parts of the UK. Mr Burnham warned that "many of [the wildfires] have been created by disposable barbecues". He said the message needed to get "out loud and clear" and urged people not to use them outside "at this moment".
The warning also extends to cigarettes, although the Prime Minister acknowledged he doesn't "know yet what the remedy is".
Forecast and Health Alerts
It comes as the Met Office forecasts temperatures continuing to rise during the latest spell of extreme heat. Highs of around 33C are expected in parts of England and Wales on Wednesday before temperatures potentially reach 38C on Thursday.
Amber heat-health alerts are also in force across England until Friday, while drought conditions are affecting several areas. The combination of high temperatures, parched ground and a lack of rainfall has increased concerns about further wildfires as the heatwave continues.
