Boiling water kills weeds at the root, preventing them from returning, according to a gardening expert who has avoided pesticides for over 20 years. The method uses only water from a kettle, making it a free alternative to chemical weed killers or store-bought solutions like vinegar and salt.
Why Boiling Water Works
The Two Minute Gardener, who recommends the technique, said boiling water is particularly effective on patio surfaces rather than on grass. It works well for weeds growing between slabs, on gravel, or in bricks.
The expert explained: "The great thing about the boiling water is that it will actually kill the roots of the weeds. The problem with insecticides is that they kill the top of the weed, but they may not always kill the roots."
How to Apply the Method
All that is needed is a kettle and protective gloves. When handling boiling water, it is essential to protect yourself from scalding, so ensure you are wearing gloves and shoes.
Fill the kettle to the max and bring it to a boil. Once boiled, head out to the garden and carefully pour the boiling water directly onto the weeds, aiming between the gaps in the patio so the roots are targeted. Leave the boiling water on the weeds for 24 hours, then return to find the weeds shrivelled and dead.
